Early Dunedin Computer Stores

Some of the enduring memories I have of my early experience of comuters was visting computer stores and spending what seem like, and may well have been, hours stading around, looking at and playing with the computers, talking to staff and other enthusiasts.

Some of the computer stores I remember:

- Brian Snell Ltd, George Street, where I first used a computer and learned to programme
- Ecplise Radio and Computer, Lower Stuart Street, with its fantastic downstairs showroom
- Shand Computers, Lower Stuart Street, then Moray Place.
- Leading Edge Computers, upstairs in the mall on Cargill's Corner, South Dunedin. My father bought our 16K RAM pack there, and they used to have a regular Thursday night computer club meeting.
- Dick Smith Electronics, Corner Princes Street an Broadway.
- David Reid Electronics, Great King Street.

If you remember any others, or have any memories of any of these, please leave a comment.

"Computer store upstairs in mall on Cargill's Corner, South Dunedin." - That was Leading Edge Computers. I recall the Old Atari 400's and 800's and playing Defender!
Great times.

Also involved in CCCIG and built and acoustic modem.

Leading Edge Computers

Thanks Marc - I remembered the name "Leading Edge" and did wonder if that was the one.

I also remember the Ataris in there - I recall playing "Dukes of Hazard" on an Atari 800 at one time. It was at one of their Thursday night meetings that I first saw ZX Spectrum Jet Pac - one of my all time favourite games.

If you were also active in the CCCIG then we may well have met - I do recognise your name. I was a spotty kid with a ZX81 and a giant La Gloria B&W valve TV :)
