Windows Global Support scam

I just spent 16 minutes 26 seconds on the phone to Windows Global Support. Their technicians had identified "errors" on the computer I was using and wanted to help me resolve the problem.

Unfortunately I didn't think the start recording until I'd already been transferred to a "senior engineer", and I didn't realise it was set to a 5 minute maximum, but it was fun nonetheless. I think I need to make the shiny fresh Ubuntu Unity desktop behave a little more like Winders.

I'll do better next time - promise.

Global Support Windows Scam

This morning I received a phone call at home from an unidentified party (claiming to be from Global Support, a “Windows-certified technical department”), warning me that I had a serious on-line infection on my home computer, that was affecting 40-percent of Window users. No identification was provided on request.
They asked me to turn on my computer and check an administrative list of errors and alerts, which I did. But when they wanted control of the computer, I stopped and asked them to send me email notification of the problem and proof they were authorized. They said they would—I have heard nothing since.
When I got to work I mentioned it to a colleague, who told me she had received a similar call a couple of months ago, and realized it was a scam, hoping they hadn’t hacked into her computer. (She purchased another computer as a result.
Why doesn't WINDOWS send an alert to it users to prevent further victimization?

"Global Windows" from Newark called me today and, not wanting to waste any time, I immediately said "you should be ashamed of yourself, I know this is a scam, don't call again". But the caller was a persistent SOB and jumped on the defensive, saying he wasn't scamming me, he was trying to help me. My windows computer has been sending error messages to them. (I have a mac.)
The debate over scam/not-scam went on for almost 10 minutes! He wanted to know all the ways I knew it was a scam (by the sounds of one of the posts above, that's because they have a script to explain away all the things that make them seem like a scam). Finally, with both of us actually yelling at each other, I said "you know how I know this is a scam? A professional IT person would not get into a yelling match with a customer he cold-called!" And then I hung up on him. He was so rude to me! But I am looking forward to their next call so I can use them for entertainment.

They are officially worse than the fraudulent duct cleaning service that calls every week.

I received "the call" at about 10:30 pm. I asked where they were calling from - they said, in a south India accent, "Ohio". That would have made it after midnight there. So I knew it was a scam.

They had my telephone number and my last name, but referred to a Mrs MyLastName but I am not married. They said "Global Windows Support" was part of Microsoft. They said my computer contacted them reporting errors. I said how did you match my computer with my telephone number and they said it was the unique system number on my windows computer that provided them the information.

I asked to speak to a supervisor, and he said he was the supervisor.

I asked why his number did not come up in call display - he say they were using Skype.

I explained to them about the 'do not call list' and that their call was illegal. He simple (in a South India accent) "oh no, it is legal".

At any rate, they finally gave me a call back number, but described in European style (Eighteen Hundred, Eight Four Seven, Eight One Zero Zero, instead of One Eight Hundred etc.) 1-800-847-8100. This number reaches "The National Telemarketing Company" and offers to send you to an agent if you press 1. - I'll call them from work (Department of Justice) and see where I get to. hehehehehe.

Called the 1-800 number - turns out to be a US not a Canadian number - very nice person answered and she was quite informative. The number belongs to some sort of US marketing company which states it does not make outgoing calls except at US elections on behalf of political parties. So, seems their 'phone number has been virtually high-jacked by the scammers.

At any rate, as the scammer uses Skype and no number appears in call display, it is easy to avoid - simply don't pick up the 'phone. Or if you do, play them like a fish until they hang up. ;)

Global Support Scam

I get these calls every few weeks and I think it is the same guy everytime and the same guy from your recording. The first time I got the call, I just hung up. The second time I asked for a call back number, which they gave and I called back -- it was not real. The last time, just moments ago, I let the guy go for awhile and I played the computer illiterate like you did in your recording (ie. "we don't drink rum in this house.")... It's hilarious. In fact, during most of the call I was looking at tabloid websites and making up numbers when they wanted me to count the errors on my computer until they were satisfied. They told me to log on to their website -- globalsupport.com -- which is not part of Microsoft. They just kept moving forward. I finally just said, "Oh my... How much is this going to cost me to fix?" To which they answered, 'It's only $199 for 4 years of protection." To which I replied, "Good bye scammers!"

That recording was near the very end of the conversation, so I'd probably been on the phone for 10 or 11 minutes by the time that started. It ended when he suddenly hung up without warning.

They started the call saying that my computer had "errors." I kept asking which computer, because I have several, but it didn't seem I have to register. At one point I think I even admitted I have over 170 computers, but got worried he might hang up if I kept pushing that line :)

The technical guy sounds Indian and in my pint of view, he is actually very helpful. The guys from my trusted remote PC repair aren't Indians but they are very polite during my inquiries. I'm not sure if it is really a scam.

Sure, the guy was very helpfully trying to steal my money and install a Trojan on my computer. It's a scam, and easily identified for many reasons:

1. Nobody - not Microsoft, not "Windows Support" or anyone else, will cold-call you to tell you about a virus alert, error file or any other problem with your home PC.
2. They use innocent files normally present on your computer to try to convince you their pretext is true; in this case the device driver info files in C:\Windows\inf
3. I don't run Windows.

So there you have it. Oh yeah, BTW, I've replaced your link with one pointing to the New Zealand Ministry of Consumer Affairs Scan Alert page for this type of scam. I thought it would provide more value to my readers than your original link.

we seem to get a call every week now , for about 6 weeks , around tea time , same modus operandi , the other half just hangs up , i try to keep them on the line as long as possible , someone must be paying for the call and the time of the person , one time asked them where they calling about the wooden or aliminium windows , another started asking about the weather in lower hutt as there was snow in the south island , i used the i have a mac computer they hung up straight away so that didnt work! , today i managed to keep shirley on the line for 7 minutes , i will try harder .

We were getting regular calls around tea time as well, but we haven't had one for a couple of weeks now. I agree that if enough people tie them up as long as possible it will eventually impact the economics of the scam, making it less appealing. I've found that there's a bit of a trick to keeping them on-you need to make it seem as if they're getting somewhere otherwise they'll just hang up suddenly. I need practice :)

I Have been receiving calls from 0019354790... today i picked up...an Indian lady telling (calling me on my surname) me she is calling me from Windows International IT department to inform me that they are receiving errors from my computer... so i completely lost it naturually since its prob been the 20th or so time they called and i told her its illegal and fraudulent to make these calls... she said to me have i gotten this call before and i said yes plenty of times.. let me guess your an Indian calling me from anywhere but India ( she poked in she is calling from America) and i told her funny they would call at round 3-4am their time... she said to me... have u given ur information previously and knowing i didnt .. i said yes and she was mad at me... for giving out the information.. and then told me she is not calling from microsoft.. blah blah blah eventually cutting it short i told her if she thinks for one min i am switching my computer on she has another thing coming... and she put down the phone...

Just to be sure this is a scam right? Or i am in some serious trouble now!
